Research, sources and the context behind our claims

A percentage without context says little. That's why we record here where statements come from, what a study actually shows, and where the limits of the evidence lie.

Independent sources

These sources cover air quality and exposure. They don't automatically prove how any specific product performs.

RIVM

Ultrafine particles and Schiphol

The RIVM defines ultrafine particles as particles smaller than 0.1 micrometre. Research around Schiphol found that short-term higher concentrations were linked to more respiratory complaints and medication use among children, especially those who already had respiratory complaints. The RIVM stresses this is not proof that long-term exposure causes respiratory disease.

Milieu Centraal

Wood burning and PM2.5

According to Milieu Centraal, household wood burning accounts for roughly 23% of the Netherlands' PM2.5 fine-dust emissions. That figure is about national emissions and doesn't automatically say how much wood smoke is present in any one home.

RIVM

Pollen and air quality

The RIVM describes pollen as part of air quality for people with hay fever. Actual exposure varies by location, vegetation and weather conditions, so national counts are only a general indication.

Product testing and certificates

For product-specific performance we hold ourselves to a higher standard of proof than for general air-quality information.

What belongs in a test

  • The exact product and configuration
  • Who carried it out, when, and how independent it was
  • Room size, measurement duration and test conditions
  • Measurement method, starting value and end value
  • A full report or a verifiable summary

Current status

Product specifications on this site come from available manufacturer data and existing product documentation. We'll publish separate lab reports, certificates and ozone tests here as soon as the original documents are available per model. Until then, we don't present such specifications as independently proven health results.

Our rules for strong claims

No medical promises

An air purifier isn't a treatment and doesn't replace a doctor, medication or ventilation.

Context with figures

We state population, location and limitations when needed to understand a figure fairly.

Separating product and research

General research into air pollution isn't proof that every device achieves the same result.
